I Decide - Yesterday

Many times our past experiences with our kids stop us from doing something today. And then we create those impressions “cannot decide for self, will waste time, cannot take decisions, will only watch videos, etc”.

All of us are actually self-directed learners. We are designed to be so, just observe a two-year-old being clear as to what he or she wants to do during the day and so does a 72year old.So importantly we have to stop ourselves from interfering in a child's self-directed learning. We have to start believing in their decision-making. If you think they are not capable, isn't this an opportunity to develop that capability, by trusting their thinking, their choices, their failures, and learning there from. Our role is then that of a listener, observer, and follower. We need not observe what is obvious but to also listen to what the child is thinking.

Planning is a process, a tool to bring democracy in the environment - I DECIDE is the freedom to choose while I PLAN is the responsibility associated with that freedom. Each family gives a different shape.

Planning is not only for the child - it's a process, it’s a way of life for the family. It's a culture that can be developed to bring this thinking process in the child by just sharing your own planning, inviting to coordinate, and so on. When this culture is created for the child - the child gets the opportunity to think, share and coordinate. This helps to understand others - their planning, their constraints, and struggles, etc.

So today introduce your child by sharing in what all ways the child is directing his or her life. Remember self -directed does not mean self-learned - it only means that child is directing what, when, how, where etc. No matter what the age, you will find a space to know in a child's life HOW he or she is directing the learning (life).
